Mezze Bar

Cuisine: Cafe, Mediterranean, Breakfast, Tapas/Small Plates

The only place I go for iced coffee. Truly the best in Auckland city – ice cream and real coffee. I’ve never tried their selection of tea before, but they come greatly recommended by friends. The selection of desserts is impressive, and the buttermilk chocolate cake is delightful.

Wil try their tapas soon!

Excellent ambience and great service too!

Scopa caffe cucina

Cuisine: Italian, Pizza, Breakfast

The ambience and service are great.

I had the Maestro pizza which was okay. It cannot be faulted, but I’ve had better. Portions are generous. I’ll probably try the pasta next time if I ever drop by Scopa again. The tiramisu was good, the coffee flavour was very strong which is to my liking.

Dragons Chinese Restaurant

Cuisine: Chinese, Asian

Excellent yum cha offered by Dragons and very reasonably priced. There were six adults on our table and we spent about $80. We even ordered the more expensive dishes on the menu such as roast pork.

I’ve lived in Asia and Auckland (where yum cha places are amply offered), and Dragons has one of the best yum cha I’ve ever had.

I’m already planning to go back next week. The place is always bustling, so it is best to make a booking!

Plum Cafe

Cuisine: International, Cafe, Bistro, Brunch

I had the Egg Montreal which is nothing special. My friend had the Plumster which she enjoyed a lot. It may be a matter of ordering the right dish because another friend of mine also recommends the Plumster.

Service is average. The place is reasonably tightly packed. Waitresses keep on bumping against our table, spilling our coffee in their dishes.

I’ll probably try another cafe for brunch next time.

Nicolini's Italian Cafe Bar & Bistro

Cuisine: Bistro, Italian, Seafood

The highlight of the restaurant was the food – I had gnocchi which came in a portion that was much smaller than the other types of pasta, but was good. The garlic bread was excellent – filled with butter and garlic which is very indulgent! My friend had the penne (can’t remember the exact dish), but she liked it a lot. Another had the calamari which lacked taste and seasoning.

The worse part of the experience was the service. The waitress got our orders mixed up and after carrying my dish to two other tables and back to the kitchen, it was cold when it arrived on my table.

The place is not very big, and the waitresses keep on bumping into my chair, without any apologies.

Regardless, I would come back again ordering a bigger portion pasta dish with the yummy garlic bread and cross my fingers for better service.

Pandoro Panetteria

Cuisine: Desserts / Bakeries

The highlight of the cafe is the service – the cashiers and waitresses are very friendly.

I had the almond croissant which was unfortunately very tough. I have a feeling it is because it was exposed in air, sitting in baskets behind the cashiers.

Coffee was only average – a little bland to taste.

All in all, I’ll definitely not be visiting this particular Pandoro branch anytime in the future.

Astoria

Cuisine: Bar Food, Breakfast, A La Carte, Brunch

I had the lamb’s fry which was really good. The portion was reasonable and I finished the meal feeling really satisfied. So the higher than average lunch prices is justified. My friend had the chicken schnitzel which she enjoyed as well.

The coffee was good – I had the mochacino which is priced a little higher than other cafes but came in a large mug. The only fallback was the fact that I had to carry the coffee to my own table which was rather difficult as the cup was filled to the brim and I was carrying a very heavy big bag. Despite what was discussed below, I don’t believe it is the most efficient service and it is not customer-friendly.

Regardless, I enjoyed the food and coffee, and I will go back to Astoria if I ever feel like splurging for lunch.

Soho Brown's

Cuisine: Cafe, Breakfast, Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches

I had the lamb sandwich with aioli. It was very dry, with so little aioli and the lamb itself was not succulent. I also had the cheesecake as dessert which was not particularly outstanding, but all desserts in general was very reasonably priced.

As mentioned by other patrons, the service is not stellar. The cashier who served me could be friendlier. Cutlery also did not look very clean.

The ambience is the cafe is very nice. It does become really busy during lunchtime, and it could be a challenge to get a table.

All in all, I don’t think I will be visiting this cafe anytime in the near future.
