We opted for a take away meal tonight. Wonderful! I asked for the salad dressing not to be on the salad, so they gave me… a tiny pot to add to my taste. The salad was fresh.
The rest of our choices were beautifully prepared and presented – the BEST satay kebab I have ever had and I’ve tried them in several places, worldwide. Definitely a favourite style for a treat – either dining in or taking home. Thank you!

The first time my boyfriend and I went here we had a $50 voucher and the food was amazing and priced very well. We had entrees, mains, and brought our own wine and still weren’t able to finish spending our $50 voucher!

We went back with my boyfriends parents and our experience was great yet again. The staff were so lovely and welcoming and our food was perfect!

Would definitely come here again!

This was my first time eating Cambodian! Being vegetarian, there was a great range of dishes available for me to try! I had the khmer rice rolls to start, these were good; the SAN sauce they were served with was delicious. Stir-fry mushroom was my main and that was yummy. The atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely and the staff were good. I have since been back twice for takeaways. Both time I had the khmer stir-fry noodle – so good. The one and only downside to this great restaurant is that I personally feel that the takeaway meals are a bit small for the price. All in all, I would definitely recommend SAN!!

It was my first time with 2 friends for dinner. Firstly, service was good, friendly and neat. We were so disappointed with “San platter”… all stuff came from supermarket or frozen direct. So lazy kitchen. Shame on you. They should provide home made platter, if it is called ” San platter”. Horrible start with horrible starter. That’s all. Kitchen staff must think about it, otherwise I can’t find any pride of food.

2 stars for service and one of mains.

We had dinner at San 3 times already and loved it every single time! Great flavours, fantatstic service with smiles all around. On top of it it’s a wonderful place to sit, relax and take time to chat with the people you’re there with. This is probably the warmest place in town (the gas heaters are doing their job wonderfully) and has got very nice atmosphere. 5 stars from us!

Went with a deal voucher for an entree platter and 2 mains and it was OK.

We had a gluten free person with us and there were quite a few options. They changed our entree platter to all rice paper rolls and the spring rolls and samosas contained gluten and that was their initiative so I really appreciated that. Also in seeing those standard super market bought deep fryable little samosas and spring rolls going out to tables I was double pleased.

I had a seafood satay dish which I really enjoyed. It wasn’t a big meal though and if it had been full price (I was there using a Deal Voucher) I would have thought it on the small side. All in all though this dish was good with a nice flavour and everything tasted like it was cooked well.

My friend had the Cambodian Pancake the vegetarian option. This was a huge disappointment. The meat version comes with minced chicken (which didn’t appeal to either of us) but the vegetarian version was simply an eggy pancake with a tiny pile of mung beans inside. We were lucky we got the satay as we could pop a few veges inside to make it worth eating.

The service was good, they checked back on us and our food didn’t take long to come out it is just a shame the second meal was so flavourless and boring. The space itself is lovely though it does get very loud so if you go I would request an upstairs table (it was fully booked last night) or the front window table.

My wife and I dined at San this evening. Growing up as a kid, my mum helped a lot of Cambodian refugees settle in NZ. In return, they would often bring us home cooking as thanks. I can tell you that San is an authentic Cambodian experience. The gentle flavours of the dishes were delicious and nothing was overly salty like in many Asian restaurants. They also do not use MSG in their food. The food is well presented and generously portioned. You can tell whoever is cooking the food is putting their heart into each plate. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The decor is not exactly authentic, but the wide open space and ambient music make for a relaxing meal. Great job, we will be back.

Really hope this place hangs in there and builds on the good work they are doing. Super friendly and happy to take the time to explain the menu. I don’t know much about Cambodian food. But I’ve been to Vietnam and Thailand and this place seems to be genuinely authentic. We had summer rolls, the fried pancakes and the beef friend noodles. All great. Don’t be afraid of the chili flakes though. Brought a bottle of wine in and the whole thing only cost $44. Nice structure to be dining in too.
Warning – They don’t appear to sell alcohol, so BYO.

We held a function here and the food and service were amazing. The food was very tasty and fresh. The staff were charming and helpful.
Highly recommended. The venue is very attractive – it has character and is in convenient part of town.

My husband and I had dinner here last night. We shared an entree platter and each had a main. The cook was only too happy to adjust his menu to appease my husband at no extra cost. The service was great, the atmosphere is very pleasant and we would go back again. It looks like the restaurant is quite empty but it actually has 3 floors. If you go here remember it is BYO and doesn’t sell any alcoholic drinks at all. I wish someone had told us that :)

Four of us had dinner here on Friday night.

We had two of the San platter for entrees and then a main each. Flavours and textures were wonderful and the service was most friendly and attentive. We all agreed that we would be happy to return.

It took half an hour to take our order and another hour for the food to come, despite having only half of the tables taken. It was very kind of them to make the table available for us at short notice, but the service plummeted thereafter.

I was really disappointed with the food, the flavours were bland and appeared to have absolutely no seasoning. We had this take away after getting their flyer in the mail. It is a real pity the food was so poor because the menu looked so good and the ratings on MenuMania seemed to indicate the food would be good. I wonder if they had a different chef cooking our food. Unfortunately for Sans (especially after they did a flyer drop) we will not be eating from there again. We would not recommend this restaurant to friends and family either.

San cafe is a bit of a hidden gem. I have been about four times since they opened and everything I have ordered has been delicious and outrageously good value. The service has also been extremely friendly.

The portion sizes are generous and the food is definitely a cut above most of its competitors. I can vouch that the Bai Char (Cambodian fried rice), Satay Pork Spare Ribs and Ginger chicken meals are great and the San Platter is not a bad little starter either.

I will certainly be back to try for a few more lunches/dinners to try the rest of the items on the menu.

Hope I see you there – perhaps we can split some Khmer rice rolls and a warm beef salad??

Went for a meal after reading an article on the owners in a Dunedin weekly newspaper. Turned out we were their first telephone booking. Knew the experience would be special the moment we were welcomed at the door with typical Cambodian friendliness. We had a san platter for entree which came with a lovely/ sweet chili dipping sauce. For mains we had Loc Lak (a warm beef salad) and Pork Spare ribs with a gorgeous peanut sauce. Both were delicious. The Pork Spare ribs dish is the invention of the mother of the owners and was just right for my european palate. Not too hot and not too bland. Finished the meal with green tea. Will we be returning? Most definitely!!
