I visit here at least a couple of times a month and love it. In addition to the great coffee, friendly staff, and good food, there is the bonus of the Country Providore store on site.

Was a bit dubious about trying this cafe because of several bad reviews but like to make my own mind up about such things. Pleasantly surprised. Arrived about 10.45 am. Seated straight away and had choice of either inside or courtyard. I ordered all day breakfast, Eggs Brownstone which was Eggs Benedict with bacon. (There are 4 choices) Bacon nice and crispy, muffin crispy, not soggy, hollandaise nice and lemony. Coffee was great. Friend just had blueberry muffin and coffee but was very happy with choice. Service OK and only waited about 15 mins for meal to be cooked. Admittedly, it wasn’t busy. Apart from being a little pricey, everything else was good.

Went to Punnet today with friends for brunch and it was amazing! Food & coffee was absolutely delicious, and staff were super friendly and welcoming. They served the kids very quickly then kids went and had a ball outside on tramp, swings & giant chess – then our meals arrived leaving us adults to enjoy the food and each other. I couldn’t recommend enough – awesome place to go!

Went to Punnet with my nana today. After reading some of the reviews I was abit cautious about everything HOWEVER we got seating very quickly, order taking quickly, coffees came in less than 5 minutes and our food less than 10 minutes later. I had the chicken thyme burger which was huge and absolutely amazing! My nana had something else which I cannot remember, it looked kind of small but she said it was delicious! Great service and great food! 5 stars!

Our family went to Punnet CafĂ© for lunch a couple of weeks ago for my son’s birthday. I was a bit put off by the reviews, but that is where he wanted to go. Our meals were good, however the cheesecake that was meant to be served with a berry sauce, was served plain with no sauce, cream or anything but plain cheesecake. This wouldn’t have mattered if the person ordering it was told beforehand and then they could have chosen something else. Apart from that everything was good. The meals were good and the service was fine.

We met family at Punnet for Fathers Day for coffee & cake.

Service was absolutely terrible, the male manager was so rude and could not have been any more unhelpful. Some of the family travelled 45mins, for rubbish service, a very noisy atmosphere and average coffee.

On a positive note the hot chip were very nice and the kids could play on the play ground. But I won’t be going back again!

My sister picked this place for lunch & I came on here to check the address … & from the reviews I was a bit worried. But, our overall experience was very positive.

We were in a large group with children. Drinks orders taken & delivered promptly. The manager (I believe) came over to say they’d take the kids orders first as there were more people booked in & they thought the kids would be best served first to keep them happy. Nice thought.

Then the adults orders were taken & arrived after the kids had finished but that worked out ok. Hubby doesn’t like pork, lamb or meat on the bone so was a bit limited for choice (his fussiness probably though!). Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal though my lamb pattie was very salty!

My sisters first coffee was nice but she took her second back as it tasted burnt – a common thing with other reviewers I see.

Was surprised that for a cafe with a playground, they had no change table in the toilets – I had to change my boy on the cold concrete floor. But they had high chairs & they brought me some hot water for his bottle so I can’t complain!

Male Manager is a grump. Good menu but slow service. Cakes in cabinet are served too cold so come out as solid lumps. I’m a local but now prefer to drive to other cafes as those are much better.

Well, after reading the reviews, I thought we were brave to go! We’ve just been there for lunch and it was just great! I felt the need to help the ratings by writing a reveiw. The service was excellent and the food very yummy. Competitively priced as well. 5 adults for lunch and no complaints. Food came out on time, coffee was lovely and plenty hot enough. The kids had a great time playing outside, so all in all…take no notice of the bad reviews, give it a go.

Pleasantly surprised, as read these current reviews before going yesterday for lunch and was a little nervous. I did giggle when, upon arriving, as friends had arrived a bit earlier, said a couple of things on the menu were not available, ie smoked chicken and one other item, as this was a gripe with previous reviews.

I had eggs benedict and it was delicious…good size and plenty of bacon, top marks !!! My two friends had the venison burger and they were happy with it. Coffee was very nice…not overly hot, but still good and not burnt. The service was good and very friendly…So far, will be back again.

Punnet, what has happened???? This place has gone from having a great menu, memorable food, and wonderful staff….. to being a sub standard venue that is not worth the drive.

We dined there on Saturday 8 March for lunch…. No champagne available, 3 key menu items not available and poor service right from the get go. When our salmon salads arrived, they were average at best.

We also stopped into the shop and got terrible service from a short haired, middle age lady. I had to interrupt her personal conversation to part with some money and god forbid, actually buy some products.

After being such fans for a good 6 months, I won’t make any attempt to go back at all, and can’t recommend it to anyone.

The service is incredibly poor, we waited over 45 mins to get our order taken, even after asking. Tables who came in after us had eaten and left before we even got our lunch. One of our table ordered fries with his burger that arrived 20 mins before we got our lunch. Punnet you have dropped the ball here – used to be so good, but unfortunately we will not return.

Went there with family for breakfast and had a very disappointing experience. We made a reservation so they knew it was a booking for 8. On arrival we were told that they were short staffed. No one came near us for half an hour despite us approaching staff twice. When they did take our order we were first told all the food they didn’t have. Two of us ordered punnet Benedicts which was meant to be served on a potato rosti. When it came out it was served on bread with an awful tasting holandise sauce. No kids menu. Ordered sausage and told later there was none. Average service, food and expensive.

Visited Punnet today being a public holiday. Very poor selection of food available, no menu items only sweet cakes from the counter. 15mins after we received our cake the coffee arrived and it was warm not hot, I asked for sweetener for one of the coffees and the lady said she would have to hunt for it but didn’t come back. On top of that we paid 15% surcharge today!!! good value NO.

We have had two experiences at Punnet recently – both of them mediocre. The first was a casual coffee – we were given our food and the coffees were to come. 25 minutes later we decided to leave and asked for our money back as we hadnt received our coffee, and were asked if we would like our coffees as ‘takeaways’ !! Hardly my idea of having a relaxing coffee out. We were then told that ours were the next coffees to be made – and we still waited. Half an hour is far too long to wait for a coffee.

The second time was worse. We took our family from America there. That was a mistake. The first thing the waitress told us was that there were no chicken strips, no sausages to go in the breakfas,t and no fish. Offputting to say the least at 11′ish in the morning, particularly when we visited the shop attached to find that they had sausages and chicken for sale. Maybe the cafe could have borrowed some to tide them over ??? The next fiasco was the drink. They advertise Coke (you know the universal Coca Cola….), but when we ordered it they said they only had diet Coke and they were changing their drinks to Phoenix drinks. Service not brilliant, food average and expensive – not enough selection in the food cabinet forcing customers to order a meal at a higher cost, rather than having some ready to go food. There are many other cafes with better service and food/prices – we will go elsewhere next time.

Nice setting, but poor service.

Was in a group of 7 – we ordered meals & drinks about 25 minutes after arriving once the waitress finally came over… so a bit of a wait to get attention at first.

I had the pork dish – was notified the kitchen was out of beans, so took it, kind of wished I hadn’t of taken it – think the beans were the main part of the dish. It was 11am, and I had ordered something off the lunch menu, and to be out of the essential part of the dish was a bit of a concern.

Our drinks never arrived & we had to follow up – they had lost our order, and were on the house – and the coffee was good! So that made up for the 1 hour wait on coffee.

Average service. Average food. Good coffee. Good setting.

Went in shortly before Christmas for lunch. Hadn’t made a booking but thought we would try on the off chance there was a spare table – though we would have had no issues if this was not the case.

Cafe was about half full. There were a couple of reserved signs and a fair few spare tables.

Stood around for about 10 minutes trying to get the attention of the staff. Finally managed to catch the eye of one of the staff and politely enquired if we could sit at one of the tables without a reservation sign. We were asked if we had a reservation to which we reiterated that we hadn’t. The waitress remarked that there was no chance of us getting a spot to eat. This was conveyed to us in a most impolite manner – bordering on rudeness. We were made to feel most unwelcome and so left.

The only redeeming thing I could add from this most unpleasant experience was the presence of the gift store which was well stocked and the staff were very polite and helpful.

We dropped in for a mid-week morning coffee. The welcome was good and the whole place was clean and attractive. We were a little disappointed – my coffee was slightly bitter (there’s no real excuse for this), the other coffee was OK and the hot chocolate was given a ‘very good’. Cakes were chosen from the cabinet and were solid sugar and butter. All in all, a little disappointing.
However, we found the shop was excellent and the kids play area was also very nice and well maintained.
We will assume this was a ‘not so good’ day at the cafe and may well go back sometime in a few months

After reading through some of these terrible reviews one could be swayed either way to visiting this Cafe, myself as a barrister have been subject to these reviews also and know only to well that one persons perception of a Cafe should never be a deciding factor to try it for yourself there’s always two sides to a story. So…. I took my wife out to lunch for her birthday and we were far from disappointed.
We were welcomed with smiles as we walked in and were told to sit anywhere we liked.. it was busy but we were happy to see a empty table out in the sun. We had cold water and menus brought out to us instantly and the waiter was attentive and efficient. I ordered a coffee which was unlike me as I am fussy with coffee and have been constantly disappointed around town so normally opt for a cold drink.
I’m glad I did order it because the coffee was great! very well made, so well that I had a second!
I ordered the steak sammie and my wife got the pulled pork Taco. While waiting for our meal another table of woman sat out in front of us and I could just see that it was going to be an “difficult” table and was bound to provide some wait time entertainment… Which it did.. A low flying Plane on final approach to Hamilton airport was lucky to avoid dragging his undercarriage on the tip of one woman’s nose as she pointed out to her friends the prices of the dishes and what was wrong with the menu… while ordering they continued to show how much better they were than the rest of the world to the young waitress who dealt with them very well and professionally.. probably better than I would have that’s for sure.. well done to her and she could work for me in hospo any day! Our meals showed up in very good time and were very well presented. Both meals were very tasty and well worth the price. I think people tend to forget that they pay a little more for table service which is not something that every Cafe offeMorers and menu prices should not be compared between those that do and those that don’t. All in all lovely sunny well set up venue, good food great coffee and a very nice little country shop/ice cream stall. Great attention to detail guys, I can see the hard work that has gone into it.
Well done and keep up the good work. We will definitely be back.

We had lunch at Punnet this week. Having been to Punnet many times in the past this was the first time since it had changed hands. Unfortunately it was an incredibly disappointing experience and, although the service was quite good, the food left allot to be desired. The menu is now very basic and over priced. $24 for a salad consisting of spinach, crispy bacon and onions and a soft boiled egg, nothing special about this at all. The guests we took were also incredibly disappointed with their meals. The coffee was average. The only redeeming feature was the shop which has been extended and has a beautiful selection of gifts and fresh produce. We won’t be eating at Punnet again but will certainly return to the shop.

Went for a girls lunch on Sunday to celebrate a birthday. Had never been to Punnet before but have driven past a few times so thought it would be a good place to go.

Wrong. The service was OK but certainly not what I would class as friendly. The wait wasn’t too bad for our food to come out but most of the dishes were either obviously BURNT or seriously over cooked! I am guessing that’s why the wait wasn’t so bad as they were probably already on plates waiting for someone to order them. My “slow cooked” lamb was so tough that I couldn’t even bite through it. ‘

Seriously disappointed, went there once, will never go again.

We had lunch at Punnet today.
Loved the coffee – we had 2!
My partner ordered pork and was impressed with the meat but especially the flavours of his relish and Winter slaw. I had scallops, when I ordered I was told the portion was small, I choose to proceed with the choice. Was I pleased? Oh yes they were Divine.
Thank you, for the nicest coffee and cafe lunch we have had in sometime.

Went to Punnet yesterday for lunch. The atmosphere was very noisy. My husband chose the pork schnitzel, and I chose the scallops. I was told that it was only an entree sized portion, but I said that was okay, it was only lunch after all. Our meals duly arrived. My entree sized portion of scallops consisted of 2 scallops!! I was rather surprised considering it cost me $26!! If you are going to serve entree sized portions, please charge an entree sized price. My husband said his pork schnitzel was fine. The coffee was awful.

Arrived at Punnet for lunch today. Waiting for menus was a nightmare and when I asked if we could move to the outside play area I was told I would have to ask the other lady. So I waited and wasn’t even greeted with a smile. I was informed that we weren’t allowed food out by the playarea – she was quick to inform me that they were short staffed – as a customer thats not my problem and I further queried why I have been allowed food out there before and could she please explain why other customers were eating or had eaten out at the play area. This particular lady appears in others postings and is rude – I have visited a number of times and she is never pleasant. I wanted to leave but my sister in law had her heart set on eating so we ordered – however I won’t be rushing back any time soon. I think the management need to rethink the policy on food in the playarea – as this is unfenced you can’t expect parents to leave children and dine inside. I hope the people who enjoyed the wine in the playarea and the people whos dishes where still waiting to be cleared had a pleasant lunch. Obviously not all customers are treated as gold.

Two different days-Two different experiences.
Last weekend my husband took my two boys there and they had lunch. They ate outside at the tables near the trampoline.Food was ok,portions a bit small .The boys loved the play area.
Today we all went there. We went up to the counter to order and was asked where we were sitting. We told them outside next to the play area. They said sorry but under council regulations we cant serve meals out there you’ll have to eat inside. We thought it very odd as my husband and boys had eaten out there last week so we said we’d leave.
Went back outside so the boys could have a quick play before we left and lo and behold! The waitress bought food out to one of the outside tables. So,we questioned her and she said she was sorry and didnt know what to say.
The management at this place need to ensure the same rules apply for everyone!!We will not be back!!

I frequently go to The Punnet Cafe and just love it. I have never had any problems at all with service or the staff. I often take out-of-towners as it is a lovely place to have a meal or coffee.

My favourite dish is the scallops – they are devine.

We arrived on the second seating at 1.30pm so it was quietening down. Despite that, we never received our drinks and were only attended to twice. Once to take our order (which we had to ask for!) and once to deliver the food; all while the staff seemed to be hanging around the counter chatting to each other.

Wait for food was over 30 minutes.

My dish was nice (the salmon), however my partners pork belly was dry and over-cooked, while the accompanying salad was drowning in dressing.

The place is in a nice setting, however the service and food is a let-down.

Maybe they’re not too keen on kids or something because I experienced similar hostility on Fathers Day Sep 2011.
We went to take my Father for a coffee for Fathers Day along with my Mother and 3 children.
We had made a reservation which was inside but asked if we could move outside as it was a lovely day. We weren’t allowed to sit out by the playground for some reason although there were a heap of people out there when we left.
Coffee was nice but basically our waitress was so short with us, impatient and unfriendly. She took our order and never came back to ask us how everything was going although she went back to the table next to us 3 times while we were there and she also said very obviously so that we could hear to the table next to us “Your my favourite table”. How pathetic!
We were waiting on muffins (which I asked about) in which she replied “You never ordered them from me”. We did.
SHe must have moaned to her Boss on the counter because she was just as unfriendly when I went to pay.
Yes they were busy and rushing around as it was Fathers Day but that doesn’t give them any excuse to treat their customers like they’re doing US a favour so it pretty much ruined our Fathers Day morning tea. CHeers!
Won’t go back.

Went to visit Punnet today. I would agree with reviewer in July this year, portions are small and overpriced. We both had the prawn risotto which was a very good flavour but more like a starter size – this was $18! The carrot cake portion was more generous but very dry, we were not able to finish it. Coming from England I am used to high food prices but nearly $80 for two for lunch was a bit of a shock, having been out to lunch quite a bit since arriving. The staff however were plentiful and helpful, and the bathroom clean.

We went to Punnet for lunch on the weekend. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside in the sun overlooking the strawberry fields. We had great service from attentive and friendly staff. I had the scallops and enjoyed every last bite. There was what I thought an unusual combination of scallops, chorizo, potato, almond, leek & hollondaise. WOW, these flavours & textures worked sooo well together!! I would definitely recommend this dish. My husband had the lamb rack and commented about the great flavours in the jus. The lamb was cooked perfectly – moist, tender and a little pink in the middle. We both ordered Lemon Sour Cream cake for dessert which was a great way to finish the meal. The cake was light & fluffy, served drizzled with a little lemon syrup and with cream on the side.
We will definitely be back and will take friends to enjoy the cuisine with us.
All round a great experience – Thank You

Decided to go for lunch with our kids after hearing good things about the place. Unfortunately, the first impression given by the lady at the counter was so bad that I just wanted to walk straight out and go somewhere more deserving of our business but the kids were hungry so we stayed.
Having 3 young children, my partner just went and found a table outside so that they could get settled and I asked for menus at the counter – the 4 wait staff that were standing around doing nothing just ignored me and the lady who was obviously in charge told me to wait a minute. This caused raised eyebrows between myself and another customer just because of the tone in which it was said. (I didn’t even notice the sign telling people to wait to be seated that was down by my feet, not so easy to see when you walk in and people are at the counter, maybe one at eye-level as well would be helpful?)
When asked if I had a reservation I said no (I could count at least 10 empty tables inside and out), then it took about a minute of the lady in charge to consult her diary, check with a waiter what the time was, consult her book a little longer, look a little bit more important then sigh and tell me we could sit on the table that my partner was already at. Phew! Thanks.
I then still wasn’t allowed to take menus, these had to be taken to the table by a waitress – even though I saw lots of other people taking their own menus.
The service of the waitress was ok, and the food when it came was fine – hard to go wrong with mushrooms on toast and my partner’s scallops were lovely. The kids menu could be a bit more inventive, just the obligatory chicken nuggets etc. but the play area was awesome for them.
But unfortunately the attitude of the lady at the counter killed the experience. Even when I went to pay she didn’t give me any eye contact or smile. Being in the industry myself, I would never dream of making a customer feel so unwelMorecome and even though the food was good, we won’t be going back.

This weekend we ventured out to Punnet. It was so busy we didn’t think we would get a table, but the wait staff were really accommodating and found us something really quick. Loved the fact that we could have a joke with our waitress also. We were told there was a bit of wait on food so we decided on a bottle of wine while we waited. We were stoked with what the waitress had recommended, clearly she knew her stuff. The food came out quicker than expected and looked amazing. We weren’t let down by the taste either. Clearly their Chef knows how to cook and what flavours work the best together. My lamb was perfectly cooked and hubby’s salmon eggs bene was great. Awesome environment, great food and service, will definately be coming back.

This place looks all good but we found it very overpriced with small portions of food, the wait time was too long, it was hard to get anyone to serve you to pay the actual bill, found the staff terrible, we found them not accomodating for a special day for a small family so they lost a $1000 sale, more fools them.

This was my first visit, the place was packed,in fact it was so busy inside, was too noisy so went outside ,we just had afternoon tea there, a coconut cake each and a cup of tea, it was one of the best cakes i have ever tasted, moist, delicious with like a coconut ice tasting icing, yum,i saw some of the other diners meals, and thought they looked really nice, especially the chips, will be going back for sure and highly recommending this cafe, worth a little, short drive in the country, also the store beside it is well worth looking at, has some things i have never seen before, and this cafe is child friendly, having a neat play ground for the children with tables right beside it, a lot of thought has gone in to the planning of this cafe, only thing i could suggest would be a couple of patio heaters or even better still they build an outdoor fireplace, would add to the ambience fo the place and keep it toasty warm.
