We ordered takeaway 4:50pm, till 5.35pm the order has not been done. Checked with one staff, we were told ” there is nothing we can do, the chef is cooking.”. When we requested to talk to the manager, the same staff with chewing gum in his mouth replied “the chef is manager, he is too busy to talk to you.”
Will never come back again!! Don’t want to see the chewing gum face again. And will share this bad experience with all my friends.

Cheap and cheerful. Food always tasty and cooked fast! No frills service and environment but you don’t go here for that!

Went here for a laksa to see what the fuss was all about. It was OK, didn’t find it anything special and thought KK was a bit over hyped. I think they really need to take a lesson from Asian Kitchen. Service could do with a brush up. The Asian girl at the front counter seemed more interested in her nails than customers.

We’ve been eating here regularly for 6 years
Rated 10/10. Consistent quality of each dish, consistently fast and consistently affordable.
Really good and helpful staff, simple but pleasant decor, clean and tidy.
Thanks KK team. Brilliant.

I ate at KK for the first time a few weeks back. Although the ingredients seemed to lack in quality the food itself (although slightly oily) was tasty and plentiful. The setting inside the restaurant is nothing special but there was a great atmosphere due the abundance of patrons. I ordered the roti chanai and a curry laksa both were delicious. I will certainly return.

I’ve been to a lot of restaurants in Wellington, but this one really stood out for its very bad service. I went there with my family one time but almost all the tables were already reserved. We stood there hoping that some seats will be freed up in a few minutes but the staff did not even bother to tell us to wait or something – and they were not busy (some tables were reserved but no customers yet). What annoyed me was that there was even no effort to provide customer service. We had walked all the way to this restaurant because my daughter like the Rendang there. I will not go there again.

Was really disappointed with KK Restaurant…I am a Malaysian and I do have high expectations especially when it comes to food and sadly enough, KK Malaysia did not deliver!! when I do out to dine, I expect to eat food that I don’t have the skills to prepare or don’t even know how to cook well enough . And I honestly feel that my home cook Malaysian meals are far better than KK!!!Absolutely terrible in both food and service!!

Not going there any more !!! Waste of $$$!!!

OMG seriously guys…. on visiting Wellington I was told to try this place as it’s ‘Authentic’ Malaysian. The place resembled a greasy cafe inside, oops and no alcohol which we didn’t realise, we were left with just water for ages until we could get their attention for some soft drinks. Our starters came out one by one, as one of us would finish then someone elses starter would come out and so on, same with the mains. My husband ordered his meal ‘hot’…it was Mild to taste, the rice was nasty too, I left half of my main meal and walked out with 3 other friends still hungry…..a Great Disappointment :(

Nothing was ok, neither the food nor the service.
I tasted the Chicken Sambal, that should be, according to the menu, boneless chicken pieces cooked in sweet and sour chilli sauce, served with steamed rice. Actually, it was a plate of fried chicken put in a cheap sweet and sour sauce and, in addition, the fried chicken seemed to be recycled, being fluffy and grasy.
For me I ordered a Vegetarian Curry, that should be, according to the menu, mixed vegetables in creamy curry, served with steamed rice. This plate was anything but creamy: vegetables were simply seared and put in a curry-water (I can’t say it was a sauce). I asked for an hot spicy meal (really Malaysian style) but my plate was actually mild spicy. Luckily in Malaysia I didn’t eat anything similar.
Even the service was bad: First of all they asked us to pay before our dinner and second we were two people and even if the restaurant was not busy (only other 2 persons), the two plates arrived with 5-10 minutes between one and the other. Very bad!

Generally we get great food and okay service here. Sometimes when the restaurant is busy the service gets pretty bad and the food a little bit rushed. Last week, most of my sided vegetables (with the beef rendang) were very very undercooked. Same with the veges in my roti chanai, despite sitting in the very hot sauce for more than 20 mins at the table. Not the cleanest of places, and the building is earthquake prone! (as are many, I know, but something to keep in mind).

I’ve been coming to KK Malaysia for the past 5 years and I am never disappointed. Last night we had a table of 5 and all of us had a fantastic experience with friendly, accommodating staff and fantastic food.

I particularly recommend this for students since the prices are cheap yet still filling and tasty. The Sweet and Sour Chicken and Kung Po Chicken are my favourites!

For those who have posted negative feedback about this restaurant, I would just like to remind readers/potential diners that KK’s has never toted itself as ‘fine dining’…What you will receive here is efficient service, excellent food, and at an exceptionally reasonable price. My extended family have been coming here for over 10 years (or ordering takeout) and have never been disappointed. My brothers (who live overseas) always insist on KK’s at some point when visiting (and they have both spent alot of time traveling in asian countries, including Malaysia). As a proud Wellingtonian, I will happily always recommend KK’s!

The best Malasyian Take Out in Wellington! I love Malaysian food, and these guys are heroes!

If you don’t know Malasyian food, this is the place to go and try it out. The starters menu gives you some great options to taste. And the mains are delicious and superb value. I don’t suggest you go here once. I suggest you go here until you have tried out at least half the menu.

This has to be the best malaysian restaurant in Wellington. The food are delicious and prices are more than reasonable. My all time favourite is the seafood curry laksa, must try! Portion size generous for the price. Quick and friendly service.

In short, I do not recommend this place to anyone…

At first we were greeted by a disinterested waiter with pants half hanging off and showing off his green underwear gangster style.

His attitude was worse, and he just gestured towards the table with his chin very rudely.

By the time we sat down two menus were practically thrown at the table by a waitress passing by.

The food arrived quickly I must admit but the taste wasn’t all that great and it was rather odd and had too much sauce.

The Meegoreng and Chicken Sambal had too much sweet sauce and were unlike any other Malaysian Meegoreng I have tasted…

The worst part was when a kitchen staff came to the front cashier’s stand and picked his nose for a few minutes while engaging in a conversation with the waiters…In front of all the customers and diners!!!

I love Malaysian food and I have been to many restaurants in Lower Hutt, Auckland, and Wellington and this one is most definitely the worst by far.

I’ve eaten the Mee Goreng over twenty times this year. Once I even waited 15 minutes for a table without complaining.

I wish more tables for this business.

But, what’s in that Mee Goreng? It’s divine.

I agree with Matthew B. … I’ll take the great food served fast in a simple environment anyday … and any place that you have to reserve a table to guarantee a spot for a weekday lunch must be doing it right.

Amazing food, super fast service, large quantities and super cheap. I have been going there for over a decade now and it is always amazing, so much so that we drive an hour to go there sometimes. I find it frustrating to read reviews of people claiming that it needs re-furbishment etc and complaining about things which may matter if you were paying twice the price and expect fancy surroundings over amazing food at a stupid cheap price!

You cannot beat the curried fish. Its my favourite place and for the curried fish alone they deserve five stars…always the same AND no taking out a loan to pay for it! How do you do it KK. The staff a pretty friendly for a busy take-out cheap and cheerful cafe. You get what you pay for but in this instance so much more

Excellent, service is usually good. Can be a bit patchy on busy/rainy nights when every decides to get takeaways.

The pricing is excellent, very cheap and very large takeaway portions.

Eating in is good too. Can get a table most nights, or reserve one if in larger groups.

Their Kungpo beef/chicken, chicken wings, rendang and sambal are my favourites. I go back most weeks now

Great value for money no doubt! I usually take the nasi goreng and it’s the best I’ve ever had (tried quite a few though!…). Quantity is huge (usually does me 2 meals). It’s quick, it’s authentic, it’s delicious and it’s dead cheap!
Obviously if you’re after a romantic candel light style dinner, it’s not the place, but if you’re after a good and quick meal, then indulge!

In short: good food, good value, BUT service desperately needs some improvements.

KK Malaysian has an item in their menu that I cannot find the competition of after trying almost every Malaysian restaurants in Wellington, and that’s the sole reason why I kept going back there, and why I’m being way more forgiving than I should have.

When I did a phone order the person were being so rude I felt like slamming the phone, I was asked word per word: “What do you want?” and after I ordered, I just got a “Uh-huh” responses, and he kept cutting me off before I finished my order, didn’t even say “thank you”! And it has happened more than once.

When I was in the restaurant waiting for my food, one of the girls just sat someone down at the empty seat of my table WITHOUT asking. I know that it’s not uncommon in the place given their size, but at least be polite and ASK FIRST.

After several occasions like that, I’d avoid going back there anytime soon.

Went for a lunch to KK Malaysian around 1pm. Ambience was ok. The waitress was in a hurry to get the order. We ordered entree and mains. Both the waitresses (girls) were very rude and seemed not interested to work in the restaurant. We finished the entree and requested the mains. She forgot about it. Had to remind thrice and then she bought the food. By the time it was all cold.. Very bad service and wouldn’t go back again.. Not recommended place..

I have been to Malaysia and I often eat at Malaysian restaurants, but KK Malaysia is the best in Wellington. Despite the cheap prices, the food is excellent and authentic. It is much better than it’s counterparts, however you must get in quick as it is always busy. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Great value for money. The portions are large, but doesn’t compromise on flavour. Some have reviewed this place as making the ‘same old Malaysian food’, but I have eaten at a few other places around town and they aren’t as good or cheap.
The dining area is a bit cramped, but still clean and well presented. Takeaways are ready very quickly as well.
Definitely a favourite.

Delicious Malaysian food, nothing too fancy on the menu and extremely good prices for the quality you get.

I had a craving for curry laksa noodles late last week, and we headed toward Ghuznee Street. The curry laksa was fantastic, the broth was very spicy and rich, with hearty egg noodles and lots of fish cakes, fish balls and fried tofu. There was even tender dark meat chicken and half a hard boiled egg.

We started with some mussels which were average until we asked for some sambal chili paste, and then they were FANTASTIC.

We also tried the beef rendang with coconut rice and some roti. The beef rendang was cooked down well and tender, but could have been a little more complex in seasoning. The rice was perfect, and the roti was a little flaccid with a lot less ghee than we’re accustomed.

All in all, good food at good prices.

One Coke, one mussel appetizer, a curry laksa noodle soup, a beef rendang and roti bread all came out to $31. Good service and very intimate atmosphere. I peaked into the kitchen and it appeared quite clean and efficient.

You can’t beat the food for the value. I’ll surely be back.

KK Malaysian is good value but it is just like any other Malaysian restaurant around town, the food is the same old Malaysian you get most places. The service I would have to say needs a wake up, the food comes out within a good time frame and it will all depend on who is serving you if you get service with a smile. My friends and I usually get take out because the restaurant is very small and you can hardly move sometimes.

Their menu is pretty standard, but definitely affordable and well worth what you are paying for! Service is usually pretty quick, even during peak time. The food is pretty good, and whenever we order our food hot, it comes out REALLY HOT; just the way we like it! Try out the Hainanese Chicken rice with the awesome hot chili sauce. Kung Pou chicken rice, and hokkien mee are some of our favs as well. However, it gets pretty packed up on weekends, so make sure to make reservations.

KK is one of those really well respected Wellington institutions that people love to rant and rave about, but is actually pretty average. Sure, the food is decent enough – but it’s basically the same Malay food you can get at a handful of other places in the CBD at around the same price. The serice isn’t exactly good either, and the restuarant itself is too pokey and small, you feel you can’t really converse properly over dinner as you’re in too close a proximity to other diners. Not an awful restaurant, but just a little overrated, same old Malaysian. Worth a try.
