The girl who served me was completely unhelpful, standoffish and really quite rude, despite chatting jovially with a friend of hers for sometime in the line (of 6) waiting. When I told my housemate about it she said ‘let me guess, the girl with red hair?’ so I suppose this is common. Sushi was loose with tiny scraps of salmon and completely bland. Usually Jizo has decent food and cheap prices, so you put up with the staff. This was way too much.

Have been to Jizo a lot in the last few months and really enjoy each time. Cheap sushi (that doesn’t taste half bad) and lovely and fresh. I always order the vege tempura with rice, jizo mayo and cabbage and carrot salad (I forget the name of it on the menu) but it is soooo yummy! Amazing value for money and is cooked fresh and comes out hot. Great option for vegetarians!

This restaurant is one of the better Japanese restaurants in Dunedin. Their food is fresh, reasonably portioned (especially for their price) and presented well. Perhaps not such an authentic Japanese taste, but their food is a quite well “localized” for Kiwi tastebuds.

If I had to choose eating some Japanese food, I think I would choose this place simply because of the quality of the food. They’re quite close to what they’re meant to be. The presentation of the food is also elegant, with a wide range of dishes to choose from and a great atmosphere of the place.

The only downside of the place is that you can’t book in advance. Usually on the weekends, the place is packed. It’s not ideal for a night out.

Where to start humm,
well the teriyaki Tuna sushi is amazing i could eat it and eat it and eat it. The Spicy Miso soup is very satisfying and the karage Chicken with the mayo is crazy good probably the best fried chicken i have ever had and its always great. I haven’t had anything i didn’t like.
Its busy and quick most of the time but you’ll get that when a place has such great good.

I love this place! I recommend the spicy miso soup, the tonkatsu (which is as good as ones I’ve had in Japan), and the teriyaki beef dishes.

If you go, you MUST try the teriyaki salmon sushi… it’s amazing! It’s not very authentic Japanese in my mind (I’ve never tasted anything like that in my 3 years living in Japan), but it’s well worth it!

The only issue is that the rest of Dunedin seems to love it here too – it’s always PACKED! Not the best place to go if you want a slow, relaxed meal – I always feel that I need to hurry along to let others sit down and enjoy this amazing food!

I really like going to Jizo. Fairly authentic setting and food. The menu could be broader, but there are enough choices — both safe and daring — to satisfy. The cooking is great and the service is friendly. Highly recommended.

Have been there a lot and always order the Karaage Chicken which never fails to impress! The corkage fee is very reasonable too. I wish they would come and take our orders instead of making us line up in a very cramped area.

I am a Jizo regular but generally eat there, so I was super disappointed when I ordered a Seafood Katsu to take away and when I got home there was no dressing on my salad and I also didn’t get the dipping sauce for my seafood. Such a disappointment and it really ruined my meal. I shouldn’t have to ask if those things are there when I get a take away meal, and for $17 they should remember to put them in. I’ll go back but if I get take away I now know I have to double check these things.

Kind of the Dunedin Gold Standard for Cheap and Cheerful eateries – but the food also happens to be pretty good – sushi, tempura (anything) is all just excellent and am told the seafood is pretty good, too. In the words of chef friend, visiting from Christchurch: “this Sushi is the Shiz” – I had to ask for a translation from a passing young person – it apparently means extremely good.

Only possible downside is that it can be very busy (which says something about the local’s perceptions) and getting a seat can be a challenge.

The food is good, but the service is so poor and they don’t really care.
1. Was waiting for a table, one waitress said we could have the next table, but then gave it to someone else.
2. Instead of taking orders at the table they make you line up like some cattle factory. Would be about 10 people lining up, one waitress taking orders while the head waitress folded napkins…please, why not take the orders at the table when so hectic or have two people on. Going out for dinner is about the experience not just the food.
3. Wait for it… the head waitress used the same cloth to wipe down the chair seats as the table..yuck!

Dined there for the first time last week.
It was busy because of graduation dinners, but the staff looked after us and got us seats when the next table cleared. We were very looked after :-)

We ordered the raw tuna salmon, chicken karaage curry & teriyaki salmon. All meals were cooked to perfection – the salmon was melt-in-your-mouth devine. I would definitely dine here again and again!!

Have been to Jizo twice now. Excellent food, good quality, great variety and well priced. It’s great to have a place you can take your family that is economical AND healthy. The last visit I went with a couple of friends. The place was very busy and we thought we’d be lucky to get a seat but they work so efficiently that it was only a matter of minutes before a table was free. The food came quickly and was delicious. I had teriyaki salmon… mmm! Next week is my hubby’s birthday and I’m going to take him and the children. Our children are reasonably fussy eaters but there’s enough of a variety on the menu I’m sure they’ll find something they’ll enjoy.

Really unhappy tonight… Had a really rude waitress and when I spoke to the owner about how rude the waitress was she pretended she didn’t understand me (but she did… I’ve had other conversations with this lady and I know she understands English perfectly) .. I couldn’t believe that the owner would pretend to use the language barrier to get out of a complaint… I would have let this go if a week ago this hadn’t happened…

My sister is vegetarian and ordered Teriyaki Vegetables, which she had had many times before. She was eating away and spat out a piece of beef. I felt it, smelt it and pulled it apart and it was most definitely meat. My sister was not upset but told the owner about it and said she wan’t upset but she wanted to tell her in case it happened again to someone else. The owner took it away then came back to the table saying the chef said it was a mushroom. It was most definitely NOT a mushroom.

So now after these TWO terrible experiences I can’t believe their attitude towards keeping their customers happy. Her attitude seemed to be because they are cheap they don’t have to address complaints… terrible customer service!

We eat out for lunch every Friday, our group ranges from 3 to 9 people and we try to go somewhere new each week. We have 3 rules: 1. Has to be in walking distance. 2. $15 per head limit. 3.Can’t take longer than an hour.

We enjoyed our lunch at Jizo! It was very busy, but as only 4 of us went it was easy to get a seat, if our group would have been any bigger we would not have been able to sit together or we would have had to go else where.

The service was good and we got our food quickly. The place was clean and tidy and the staff were very attentive. We will go back again one day I am sure.

I have never dined in here as its usually chaos.
But the sushi and the chicken karaage are me and my partners favourite takeaways.

Big fan of ordering over the phone and taking away, but as I said whenever ive been in to pick up its a mad house.

Went to Jizo Cafe to have a nice meal with my wife as we often do. But upon arrival we found it was busy and we were asked to wait which is fair enough. After waiting for a while another group of 3 came in and an Asian Lady (who looked like the manager) approached them and seated them first. We talked to her and asked why we were not seated first. She said that we had to wait for the smallest table to clear because there were only the two of us, also it was very hard to understand her due to poor English. After another 10 minutes we were finally seated. The food was excellent but this kind of service is appalling.

Terrible customer service, put us off the food.

Went to Jizo tonight with my girlfriend,

The place was busy and after finding a table my girlfriend went up to the counter to order, when trying to order the food the lady behind the counter was having difficulty taking the order and hearing what we wanted to order, she started becoming agitated and yelling at my girlfriend over the counter in a rude and aggressive manner.

After my girlfriend came back to the table we decided to leave as we had been put off the place and will not be back, may be just a case of one staff member being rude but either way a terrible experience.

This restaurant is fabulous. It has a wide range of meals; sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, udon, tempura the works, all available with fish, meat or tofu, and always with vegetables or a special salad. The service is spectacular, and the prices are more than reasonable.

In my opinion, its most noteworthy aspect is its year-round supply of A-grade tuna sashimi – the price is the same all year-round, and it is always exquisitely prepared. Another favourite dish of mine is the seaweed and shrimp salad. It has a range of different fresh and delicious seaweeds, juicy shrimp, cucumber, lettuce, carrot, capsicum on occasion, and two dressings – and all for less than $9.

Jizo also has a range of Japanese and New Zealand beers, sake by the bottle or the carafe, and a great atmosphere and interior design.

I recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Dunedin as well as locals, and frequent it myself regularly – always good!
