Went for early meal before a show next door at Civic. Pleased we booked as restaurant was packed. We had light meal, Delicious seafood chowder. We were seated promptly, had polite and friendly service, meal and beverage orders were taken promptly, in fact excellent service and food. Not sure where the negative reviews came from sounds like a different place to where we had a very enjoyable quick and early meal. We will be back for full meal when we have more time. Thanks Kings

The reviews of this restaurant would have you believe it is a hopeless case. In fact they almost put me off trying it and it was only the blackboard menu on the street-side that drew me in. I was given a cheerful welcome and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and professional. I chose a special, which was a blue cod and oyster chowder. I’m a chowder freak but I have seldom eaten one as good as this.
It has occurred to me that on this site, a good many of the negative reviews are from once-only reviewers. I wonder if sometimes they have hidden agendae?

Terrible. Do yourself a favour and pick somewhere else. Staff are hopeless – don’t want to be here. I imagine that is something to do with the owner and how she treats people. Seafood is not at all fresh. Decor is old and shabby. Very slow service and very bad food. As per other diners comments – we didn’t want to pay either. If you want seafood – go get some fish and chips – you’ll enjoy it much more and have money in your pocket!

It would seem that this place has had its ups and downs over the last few years, due to what seems to be the previous management! Just returned from Kings back to my hotel room and I feel compelled to set the record straight.
I went there with my wife after searching high and low on the internet and elsewhere for somewhere to eat the world famous Bluff Oysters. When we entered the place, it looked as though it was completely empty; with two wait staff calmly polishing glasses I would have been led to believe that they were shutting up for the night! But not so, we were shown around the corner to a practically full restaurant, politely seated and our drink orders were taken.
We had a prawn cocktail and half a dozen oysters to start. The prawn cocktail was literally overflowing with succulent, fresh prawns and a perfectly dressed salad. My oysters were delicious, and served freshly shucked onto presentation shells. I now know why these oysters are so renowned. Yum.
I had the butterfish special for main course. Absolutely magnificent. Fish melted in the mouth, potatoes were spectacular. Salsa verde – perfect. My wife’s panfried salmon was equally mindblowing.
We thought we’d give dessert a crack too. We shared an apricot and apple crumble – absolutely the way to top off what was a perfect meal!
Staff were attentive and charming, drinks were of very high standard, and overall the meal was extremely good value considering the quality of the experience.
HIGHLY recommended.

Wow its funny reading the other reviews as ive been dining here the last 2 months once a week as i love oysters, i have found that my overall experience is outstanding, the food is fresh,(important being seafood) very tasty and i think very well priced, the girls on the floor are great, i would highly recommend it, Some Southlanders have a habit of being negative, i would not let that put you off your own experience.
I haven’t, Enjoy

Was walking past Kings today and it has reopened. Went in for a meal to find a new owner and a fresh new crew. WOW. What a transformation. Food was excellent and the service was spot on.. It really was world class. Finally someone has brought the modern world of cuisine to Invercargill.

We went here last night as we hadn’t been since last winter. We waited to be seated as the sign said, and 1 waitress, 1 manager saw us standing there and ignored us for at least 5+ minutes.Manager finally came over and told us how busy they were and asked us to go straight to the bar and order a drink.Once at the bar we joined another 6 people who had been given the same instructions but sadly nobody was serving behind the bar. When the waitress finally came to take drink orders the manager loudly told the poor girl that there was no time for that and come and help her set up 2 tables! We were then told we couldn’t get a drink until we were given a table. Both ourselves and the 6 others had little complimentary to say about the service by this stage! The manager was making things worse. We got to our table and we waited sometime for a drink, no water supplied.Manager came to take our orders and began by forgetting the specials and launched into how stressed she was and a detailed run down about some previous customers…who I might add, were still in the restaurant! OMG! She then argued with me about something that I knew had gluten in it and she declared it didn’t, but realised yes it ‘might’ actually.Meals were average, over priced and we froze in there because the heating was all but non existent. We will NOT go back here again.

I have always enjoyed Kings and hadn’t been there for several years so decided to try again – big mistake. Went for the obvious starter – seafood chowder. A nice flavour and consistency but I had one piece of mussell in the entire bowl and the rest of the ‘seafood’ consisted of what could only have been tinned fish. Not impressive at all. The menu has decreased in size dramatically and the prices have sky-rocketed! Due tot he prices we ordered our bluecod from the lunch menu which meant a smaller serving – happy with that after the starter – the blue cod was delicious however was served with over fried fries and one tiny piece of lettuce and one tiny piece of cucumber – not my idea of a salad. But the worst thing was the dessert – an option of fruit crumble so we chose this. What arrived was a bowl of stewed fruit – no crumble. When I said something to the ‘waitress/front of house woman’ she was loud and obnoxious and told me the chef was brazilian and thats how he made it. Needless to say I was not impressed with this and it did nothing to improve the experience. And as an aside – one couple were served their food, another waitress came out after a bit and realised it wasn’t their’s – yelled this across the room – retrieved the meals and proceeded to put the same meals on the table of the couple who had ordered them – I would not have been eating someone elses seconds!
