Coffee is usually bitter, service is slow and food is heavily overpriced.
Go across the road or down to the German cafe if you want decent coffee and acceptable food.
I really wish this place would up their game, as they are an icon on the Titirangi area.

Overall the food was average but poorly presented and offered at city prices.
The toilet was grubby old and sub standard. Even though there was a notice to ask staff to clean if it looked dirty it would have taken more than a quick wipe around with a damp cloth. We wont be returning.
We had a meal on a Friday night starting with breads and spreads which came out quickly, was hot and very yummy.
Our main courses came out a we while later which gave us a decent amount of time to chat before eating again.
The main courses where very generous helping! So full of flavour and perfectly cooked! The staff were great and spot on with their suggestions
Ordered the Hardware Breakfast (think that was the name) and hubby ordered Eggs Bene. My breakfast consisted of 2 slices of cheap Molenberg bread (so much for ‘lovely grain bread’) – should have been toasted? 2 poached eggs. 2 Watties hash browns that had been deep fried and were swimming in fat. 2 rashers of bacon barely cooked. And a chipolata sausage that was tasteless. Yes, it was what I ordered but not the quality I expected. The sparrows loved the hash browns, the hubby ate the bacon to add flavour his bland hollandaise sauce and I ate a 2 egg sandwich!
We both agreed the eggs were lovely and the coffee good, strong and hot. But come on! Store bought cheapo bread, hash browns and sausage. Try some artisan bread, homemade hash browns and a good quality flavoursome sausage. We felt ripped off as these 2 meals were made for under $2 each and you charge $15!!! Spend a bit of money on quality and learn to smile at customers. Grimaces may go with the Westie style (?) but tourists tend to enjoy pleasantries rather than muttered words and snarls.
The food was to Die for!
We chatted to people at the near by table, they were also very impressed with what they ordered.
Cant wait to go back there
Overall, I believe they don’t give a toss about their customers because they always know they’ll be more coming; ugly cramped and dirty and right on the road with car fumes. We will never go back.
The place is dirty, the staff are horrendous and the food is average at best.
I wouldn’t expect a wine glass to be brought to my table with remnants of food on it. This happened at Hardware. We then waited 45 minutes for our food (it wasn’t particularly busy) and when it arrived it was lukewarm, over cooked and bland.
The waitress cleared our plates, both of which had half of the food left on them, and went away without asking us if everything was ok. We went to pay and told her and her male colleague our feedback. They were smug, arrogant and seemed entirely unwillingly to listen to a customer. We then had the chef come out and threaten us. Bizarre.
Dirty place. Dirty looking staff front of house and back who swear at and threaten customers.
One of the biggest dumps I have ever set foot in.
We ordered garlic bread as most of people does to start.
The garlic bread was really good :), I am not big of garlic bread usually at other restaurant.
I love the atmosphere, warm cozy feel. The staff are very friendly and helpful to choosing menus.
We had lamb and Asian seafood platter, the lamb was amazing, it had nice salad with mint and really well cooked lamb. Plus Asian seafood platter presentation looked really average but taste was delightful. It had Thai style coriander n mint tasted sauce, minced chicken bite sized nugget that was lightly fried, tempura prawn, vermicelli salad, miso based salmon in bite piece, bean and kimchee. I really enjoyed dinner. I can’t wait to go back for pasta night at $18 on Thursday or Sunday
Would i go back? Hell yeah. Just avoid on weekends if you want consistency.
Havent eaten there in the evenings yet… not sure why… probably because to me its a cafe, not an evening eatery.
My only qualm being that they’re not open late on Monday (to cure my Mondayitis) and it’s always soooooo busy! Ah well, that’s what you get for being a great place to be.
