Great café, consistently good food and excellent value, have been dining here for around 11 years. Good selection on the menu and specials board, and like the extra options available in the glass cabinet too. The service is friendly and prompt. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, love the local artwork. It can get quite busy but that’s just a reflection of how good it is. A Titirangi classic .. highly recommended.

Probably great if you get service. Sat, waited..and waited, even bought someone elses food for another table, but the service never came. When I approached the desk and enquired, there was not even an acknowledgement or apology. Head over the road. GREAT service, food and efficiency. Customers vote with their feet, and I’ll head straight to the other place next time.

In a word “overrated”

Coffee is usually bitter, service is slow and food is heavily overpriced.

Go across the road or down to the German cafe if you want decent coffee and acceptable food.

I really wish this place would up their game, as they are an icon on the Titirangi area.

My husband and I decided to visit Hardware Cafe for an anniversary treat. Treat wrong word. We have lived in the area for 25 years and never ventured in for dinner only the odd coffee. The menu was was very light on choice and several of the choices we unavailable we found this unusual considering it was only 7 o’clock on a Friday night.

Overall the food was average but poorly presented and offered at city prices.

The toilet was grubby old and sub standard. Even though there was a notice to ask staff to clean if it looked dirty it would have taken more than a quick wipe around with a damp cloth. We wont be returning.

Thanks for the lovely take-away vegetarian meal that your chef expertly prepared for me today. I was touched that the front of house staff kindly arranged for me to have a specially made veggie sandwich that was not on the menu. Will definitely come here again :-)

This was a big surprise, I have always been quite iffy about the food here.

We had a meal on a Friday night starting with breads and spreads which came out quickly, was hot and very yummy.

Our main courses came out a we while later which gave us a decent amount of time to chat before eating again.

The main courses where very generous helping! So full of flavour and perfectly cooked! The staff were great and spot on with their suggestions

Oh dear, should have read May S. before going. Had first and last visit today. If this is the Best of the West then thank goodness I’m not a Westie!
Ordered the Hardware Breakfast (think that was the name) and hubby ordered Eggs Bene. My breakfast consisted of 2 slices of cheap Molenberg bread (so much for ‘lovely grain bread’) – should have been toasted? 2 poached eggs. 2 Watties hash browns that had been deep fried and were swimming in fat. 2 rashers of bacon barely cooked. And a chipolata sausage that was tasteless. Yes, it was what I ordered but not the quality I expected. The sparrows loved the hash browns, the hubby ate the bacon to add flavour his bland hollandaise sauce and I ate a 2 egg sandwich!
We both agreed the eggs were lovely and the coffee good, strong and hot. But come on! Store bought cheapo bread, hash browns and sausage. Try some artisan bread, homemade hash browns and a good quality flavoursome sausage. We felt ripped off as these 2 meals were made for under $2 each and you charge $15!!! Spend a bit of money on quality and learn to smile at customers. Grimaces may go with the Westie style (?) but tourists tend to enjoy pleasantries rather than muttered words and snarls.

Went here with my husband, and daughter for a late lunch. Ordered “Sweetcorn and Bacon Fritters”- when my meal arrived it had one tiny slice of “crispy colonial bacon” on my plate. Continued to eat the rest of the meal hoping more bacon would be hiding within the fritters- there was no more to be found. As I was hungry I continued to eat my meal regardless. This was the point where I SHOULD have said something- I acknowledge that. We lined up to pay and I asked for the menu to DOUBLE CHECK that my “Sweetcorn and BACON Fritters” were supposed to have bacon on it- of course there was supposed to be as the title is self-explanatory in itself. I said “My meal only had half-a finger sized bacon on it”- This was cruelly met a piercing-evil stare by the cashier and the barista who decided to join. The both said ” what do you want us to do about !? You should have said something earlier- we could have cooked you more bacon, you’ve had your meal now, it’s too late.” This statement was rather accusative and had a tinge of “you’re lying and you are so submissive only saying something about it now”. I gave both of them upset stare- tears about the roll down my eyes. Picked up my child – said “nothing” in response to their accusatory “what do you expect me to do!?”. My husband proceeded to pay and the cashier continued to attack him – “why didn’t you just say something?! it’s alright to say something” Well the fact is- we did complain- only to be met with their horrible attitude! What happened to “the customer is always right?”. Ruined a lovely day at the Waitakere Ranges. I will tell everyone I know to avoid this horrible café and its staff. The least I would have expected is a “sorry- it won’t happen again”. So horrible!!!

The service was one of the best I’ve had in a very long time. The waitress was very friendly and helpful.
The food was to Die for!
We chatted to people at the near by table, they were also very impressed with what they ordered.

Cant wait to go back there :-)

The cafe wasn’t overly full but still waited 45 minutes for our lunch order to turn up. We ordered a glass of wine each on arrival and that finally turned up after receiving our meals when my husband had to again complain. With most of the parking in Titirangi being only 60 minutes and not that abundant, this lunch became a stressful anxious endeavour. The food was o.k. but certainly nothing special or something you’d rave about. The cafe looked dirty and was cramped, (tables close together), would hate to be there when it is full. The barista doesn’t shut up with the loud singing and honestly you should go to lessons because it’s not pleasant at all.
Overall, I believe they don’t give a toss about their customers because they always know they’ll be more coming; ugly cramped and dirty and right on the road with car fumes. We will never go back.

Having had previous bad experiences at The Hardware Cafe, decided to give it another go. Wish we hadn’t.

The place is dirty, the staff are horrendous and the food is average at best.

I wouldn’t expect a wine glass to be brought to my table with remnants of food on it. This happened at Hardware. We then waited 45 minutes for our food (it wasn’t particularly busy) and when it arrived it was lukewarm, over cooked and bland.

The waitress cleared our plates, both of which had half of the food left on them, and went away without asking us if everything was ok. We went to pay and told her and her male colleague our feedback. They were smug, arrogant and seemed entirely unwillingly to listen to a customer. We then had the chef come out and threaten us. Bizarre.

Dirty place. Dirty looking staff front of house and back who swear at and threaten customers.

One of the biggest dumps I have ever set foot in.

I went The hardware Cafe this week for dinner.
We ordered garlic bread as most of people does to start.
The garlic bread was really good :), I am not big of garlic bread usually at other restaurant.
I love the atmosphere, warm cozy feel. The staff are very friendly and helpful to choosing menus.
We had lamb and Asian seafood platter, the lamb was amazing, it had nice salad with mint and really well cooked lamb. Plus Asian seafood platter presentation looked really average but taste was delightful. It had Thai style coriander n mint tasted sauce, minced chicken bite sized nugget that was lightly fried, tempura prawn, vermicelli salad, miso based salmon in bite piece, bean and kimchee. I really enjoyed dinner. I can’t wait to go back for pasta night at $18 on Thursday or Sunday :)

I’ve visited here a couple of times for coffee and brunch. The food is good and the atmosphere is always busy. It can be a little difficult to get a seat on the weekends, but worth a wait!

The staff are stars we a beautiful lunch I had a homemade mince burger the patty was fresh and not oily there was a good amount of salad with delicious aoli and the seasoned wedges were delicious. We had a couple of cups of coffee which again was very good. The staff were all very polite and cheerful even though it was clear they were run off their feet. I do not know why i have never tried this cafe considering we go to Titirangi area regularly but we will be returning with a healthy appetite.

My busy local cafe. Best enjoyed during the week when the service is good, the coffee maker is singing and the food is good. On weekends its often too busy with day trippers and the service is slap it down and run away.
Would i go back? Hell yeah. Just avoid on weekends if you want consistency.
Havent eaten there in the evenings yet… not sure why… probably because to me its a cafe, not an evening eatery.

Just went for dinner at the hardware cafe and couldn’t have been happier, the service was lovely and friendly, the atmosphere was awesome and to top it off the food was absolutely faultless.. Out of all 3 of our meals and the breads and dips there is not one thing we would have changed. I will definitely be going back and definitely recommending… :) **Very Happy Girls**

Waited near 15mins for a take away coffee that I had to ask where it was again, then it came within a minute but was froathing crap. It was the third time I’d been there for a T\A coffee & all were terrible so I took this one back and the barista got cranky with remark that I must be having a bad morning? Total dick. He gave me a new one that was too hot to drink. Just ugly attitude. Don’t know why people think the coffee is the best there as I never had one. Their barista who ruins good songs with his loud singing is arrogant & rude. Will not go back and if you want a creamy coffee don’t bother their singing barista as his mind is not on the job but his dreams of New Zealand Idol and how famous he will be. Twit

Sorry but for me I love a good coffee and bite but don’t want to hear the parrot trying to sing behind the coffee machine? Put a sock in it please, we’re not there for you slick. Slicks coffee is a hit/miss. I’ve sent 2 coffees back to him as they were a bubbling mess and he had an attitude like I don’t know what a good coffee is? When I’m paying $4 for it I want it too be worth it, not a throw away. When he’s on I don’t bother ordering now. Staff look dirty and shows with there cleaning skills. Will go back to see if there is a change.

My favorite hangout. I’m not sure if Allpress make a special blend for them, but this place always has amazing coffee and amazing service.
My only qualm being that they’re not open late on Monday (to cure my Mondayitis) and it’s always soooooo busy! Ah well, that’s what you get for being a great place to be.

I really enjoy coming here, it is my favourite local cafe in Titirangi. While it is true the singing barista per the review before mine is great at making coffees, a new guy has started and his coffees are the best I’ve ever had – creamy not frothy…I’ve lived in the UK and this guy still comes in on top. Food ok, I’m vegetarian so only eat the wedges which are tasty but it’s the coffee of late that make me go back for more.

I’ve recently moved here and quite regularly have my coffee and cake at the Hardware Cafe. If the guy is on (don’t know his name but he sings alot) then you can guarantee getting a superb coffee. Service is good and the food I’ve had has been great. Only critique is it is cramped but that’s better than not getting a seat.
