Went to this cafe for lunch today, and was the worst food , coffee and service I have come across in Christchurch.

Firstly – we ordered a long black, and a glass of wine.

The waitress came over with a tray with two coffees on and said- cappachino- I looked at her and said NO- I was a long black- she ignored me and said again cappachino- and started to put in front of me- I said again -NO I ordered a long black- she then says- and a cappachino- I said why would I order two coffees, she says – you ordered a cappachino- I said No I did not- she then sits my long black in front of me, and stalks off with an attitude like I was at fault. Then comes back with meals and goes – I have removed the cappachino you ordered from bill- WTF-!!! I did not order it lol ! I then see it being taken to someone else.

My meal was very average- looked at my partners meal- he ordered open chicken fillet on foccacia- it was chopped in very small sqaures and covered in a weird coloured sauce.

We eat out a couple of times a week at a range of places- and it was disgusting, he could not eat his- it was like rubber.

I stuck the fork in a piece and it was tough as old boots.

When I told the waitress she looked unimpressed- and I said he could not even eat that it is inedible and we will not be paying for a meal that we have not consumed.

When we went up to pay- they acted like they were doing us a favour by not charging us for it- no apologies !

I also had an entertainment voucher- which I should have been entitled to use for the meal and drinks we ordered and consumed- but was told no way- we have already let you off with one meal- oh my god !

Never go to this B grade establishment !

Great value for money. Although we used a voucher deal the normal prices seemed reasonable especially the $45 meal deal.
The service was quick and friendly and the portion sizes generous. I also liked the choice of two sauces ( in separate dishes)with our steaks as I couldn’t decided on just one.
The crème brulee for dessert was to die for.
Would definitely recommend and go back to try other menu options.
Great as a casual or more upmarket place to dine

Fantastic meal. 4 of us went for brunch and were all VERY HAPPY with our meal as we have been previously. We had coffee 3 of us decaf at no extra charge. Also used our Entertainment Voucher with no problem. A table of 20 came in 30mins after us and they were all served together. Would highly recommend.

Worst cafe I’ve ever been to in Christchurch. Have eaten dessert here before – big mistake – bland, tasteless, fatty, yuk. Staff are mostly officious and not friendly, they charge extra for decaf, and they have a fairly obnoxious ‘Please read’ document at the counter stating what you can and can’t do with special offers. No ambience, supermarket music, generally tacky, awful cafe. Stood at counter waiting to order coffees for easily 5-10 minutes, two others waiting too, it went on so long we started talking about it as complete strangers, but all this time there were two staff members working behind the counter within 2m of us making drinks, and one in the kitchen in full view, but they completely ignored us!

Great place for a coffee. I like the seating, the light and sense of spaciousness at Cafe del mar. I’ve never eaten here (and by the reviewed comments probably won’t), but have used it many times to catch up with friends over coffee or wine. They consistently make good coffee and have some delicious wines in their selection.

Went to Café Del Mar do try it out with a voucher deal. We ordered the chicken focaccia and were expecting seared chicken with salad and focaccia bread like the photo led us to believe. We were incredibly disappointed when our meal turned out to be a type of Indian chicken curry casserole slopped in the middle of focaccia bread. This was very poor taste.
We ended up going to one of the nearby restaurants to get a salad and get rid of the taste of the curry and bread.
Would not recommend Café Del Mar to anyone.

The most disappointing place I’ve been in Canterbury for a long time.

Extremely overpriced for very underwhelming food. Average service, and a very average ‘vibe’.

I will definitely not be returning.

Myself & 3 friends went to Cafe Del Mar in June, We had a friendly new waitress. 2 of us ordered the beef salad, when they arrived they were cold, meat was bland and rest of it was tasteless. Not usually being one to complain about a meal I I was slightly embarrassed to mention it. The waitress asked if everything was ok and I decided to be honest. The manager was called out and she was very understanding. She let us choose a new main meal each. I was very impressed by this service! Our new meals were the chicken filo and they were really delicious. This was a voucher deal we got for $70 for 4 people for a main, dessert and a wine. An absolute great deal! Thank you Cafe Del Mar for being understanding!

The food was quite good, and the amount served was also adequate. I ordered the following:

1x Main @ $24 (Steak dish w/2x sauces)
1x Sprite @ $4
1x Banana Sundae @ $12

This comes to $40 (give or take $1-$2 as I’m not entirely sure of the price of the drink but the rest is accurate).

I’ve since learned to pay closer attention to the checkout operator, because she charged me $67.

This is obviously partially my own fault for not questioning the charge but, c’mon, $5-$10 overcharged is excusable, but more than $20?

Anyway, food there is good, counter staff are lousy.

We have been to Cafe del Mar many times for lunch and went again yesterday for Mothers Day.
I ordered the BLT for my Dad and asked for it without the tomato and lettuce. I was told this would cost an extra $4.90 change charge??
They were not changing anything – all they had to do was not put in the lettuce and tomato!
Extremely disappointing and not good business sense as they have lost regular customers for $4.90.

Really enjoyed our lunch main unfortunately very long wait for meals and I thought the desserts were way over priced sad because I have been there before and found it very fair priced.
Maybe the prices have a bearing on the fact that the restuarant was empty.

We were last there about a year ago and I then had a most stunning steak and a fabulous meal. A sweet young waitress who was new to the job. The owner was there and we told him to keep her on.
Went again on Sunday and again had fabulous meals (both different
steaks). The service is so friendly and helpful and we feel very comfortable there. Would highly recommend for quality of the food and price.
If we lived nearer we would be there weekly. We travel overseas a lot and this place is among the best. It may not be silver service and starched waiters but this is not what they advertise and not what we want too often.
Also like taking our own wine.

My wife and I have been to Cafe Del Mar for 2 Breakfasts and a Lunch.
Very well priced food and very tasty, I had the Pea pie pud, without a doubt the best Pie I have ever had .
Think the TVs are a little tacky but service is magic every time we go.
Planning to try the Tea menu as this is now our favourite cafe

Went there for dinner tonight (Monday) place was fairly empty. We found the service to be quite slow but they were training someone so it was alright. Despite our meals taking quite a while to arrive, the staff were attentive without being invasive.
My husband really liked the airy-relaxed cafe setting. Husband had a steak main and really enjoyed it, said it was a fantastic meal for $24. I had the chicken with passion-fruit sauce, mash and cashews. This was pretty good, not something I have seen before so was a nice change!
I really enjoyed the selection and choice. My husband is t-total and I am pregnant so finding somewhere that caters to our needs at the moment is tricky!
We felt the prices were reasonable.
We then had desserts, apple tart and pecan pie. The pecan pie was delicious!
We would go again!

Went there for dinner and ordered breads and dips, 2 steak mains and creme brulee and pecan pie for dessert. Food was delicious and good portion size, they did however mix up our steak orders (my rare was given to my girlfriend who ordered medium rare) but other than that the meals were great and service was prompt, polite and non-invasive.

A good range of food available with snacks, light lunches to a full lunch mains menu. We ordered mains which I would rate as just ok. If I’m paying $20 for a lunch main I expect something nice rather than average. I would go back again but I’d order a dish / sandwich in the $8 range.

Very nice cafe!
The Environment is very nice and easy to find.
I double checked with the stuff about the opening time. They opened until 9 pm 7 days instead of 5pm.
Stuff at the cafe are very patient when you ask them questions.
Always smile when they are taking order or deliver food, drink.
Fast delivery after ordered.
Ice treats are very nice worth a try.

Very poor.
Arrived for brunch at 10:30 but service was so slow we had to purchase deli counter food for the baby to eat for lunch. Service staff were slow and rude.
The eggs benidict was bland and appeared to have been deep fried as the bacon snapped when you tried to get it on a fork. Eggs were dry and the entire meal was very salty.
To think I could pay the same price for a reliably excellent brunch at places like Holy Smoke makes me very annoyed.
None of the staff asked how the meal was so I have to review it here instead.
Dont bother.

Although this cafe would appear to be somehow related to the famous Spanish cafes in Ibiza/Valencia/etc. (they use a similar logo), in service & delivery it doesn’t come even close to a comparison if my recent experience is anything to go by.
I recently went there for lunch with a good business friend, who is gluten intolerant. After I ordered the Chili Beef & Bean Pasty and a smoothie, my companion enquired what options were available that he could eat. The overly rude counter person didn’t seem to have an answer for him and suggested they might have some gluten free bread. She didn’t suggest anything that could be prepared or anything further. In frustration he ordered two small things from the cabinet and requested that one be heated.
Ten minutes later when our food arrived, his request for heating had been ignored, leading to him returning it to the counter and requesting a refund.
The manager came to our table to provide the refund and query what had happened, offering us two free coffee cards as well, which was to his credit.
My pasty was fine, but not overly enjoyable due to the bad taste in our mouths the service had left, especially as it had been my suggestion to go there.
It’s unlikely I’ll be going back, as bad service can easily put you off as easily as poor food can.
A disappointing experience considering how nice the venue itself looks.
