We went here for a fundraiser quiz night. I ordered crispy pork belly. It was wet, slimy and very old looking so I asked for the lamb in pitta bread instead. This was a nasty assed burger affair. Ewww. My friend had the pork ribs. There was a half congealed sauce swamping the cold ribs, it was really laughable. I told the waitress that I did not want to pay for my inedible meal and she said as I had eaten some of it, I had to pay for it. In talking about this, everyone knows how bad the food and service is here, it came as a surprise to no one. Please steer clear of this terrible place, there are lots of nice places around.

We have dined at Cafe 162 on various occasions and have never been disappointed. The menu has been slightly changed but still offers a great selection. Starters are about $8-$11,Mains around $24-$28 with desserts about $10-$12. We started with a freshly baked Turkish bread with 3 dips- piping hot bread and mouthwatering! For mains, we went for steak and fish items. The steak dinner was well presented, moist and a good amount of handout chips, onion rings and coleslaw served. The fish dish was well presented too on a kumara and potato gratin with green beans. Fish was well cooked. My only comment is the dish needed more veges and gratin but I probably have a big appetite! To finish we shared the delicious pear and chocolate tart with citrus cream – delicious but we did think the slice could have been much larger for the price. From booking to ordering we received great service from our waitress. She was very attentive and made our latest visit a great experience. Fantastic ambience and family friendly. Highly recommended.

Pleasant surounds and reasonable service but food was very average and over priced. Very fatty pork belly. Will not be returning.

Been here a few times now, and have had really mixed experiences. Its definitely never been speedy and the food can range from good to rubbish, so very inconsistent.

Latest experience not good and I wont be returning. I went in for Fathers day, we booked in at 1pm with the family. Got seated put our orders in and waited…more waiting…drinks empty 30mins later…tumbleweed…other families waiting as well….a couple got their food, and they ordered 30mins after us. I asked what was happening and waitress disappeared..came back a while later (it was 2pm now) and we were told the chefs have said it will be at least another 10mins before they get to our order! it wasnt very busy. The Waitresses looked like they were having a great time chatting at the bar and not much action happening in the kitchen either. Other families had to go and find someone to take their order. We left, went down the road to the Pickle Jar, put our orders in and 10mins later voila awesome food and for way less cost….cafe 162 is dead in the water I reckon. If I was an owner of cafe 162, I would be really worried about locals walking out the door hungry an hr later! once the locals stop supporting this place, its all over rover…

Our family had dinner here tonight, we are locals and have never dined here before. We were all really impressed with our meals but we were more impressed with the service. Our waitress was warm, welcoming and attentive. They have cool little bags filled with all sorts on offer for kids, which is awesome. Comfortable atmosphere, cosy fire and good beer on tap. Will be going back for sure!

We dine here often – mainly because there is little to choose from in Karori – however tonight was particularly disappointing. I ordered lamb rack – which according to the menu came ‘medium rare’. The rack I was served (after more than a 30 min wait on a very quiet night) was medium to well… with the outside and bones – charcoal black (burnt)… and definitely not appetising to look at. I didn’t send it back – I ate some of it – the pumpkin mash it came with was fine and my husband was enjoying his steak but I did mention my disappointment to the waitress when she collected our plates. The response from the chef was that the marinade of brown sugar makes the appearance black…. there was no explanation for the over cooked meat.
At $28 I expect a bit more….
Café 162 offers casual dining (cutlery in a basket/ paper serviettes …) but the prices are on the high side for a “restaurant” of this type.

Friendly staff, little bit pushy though – one of the bar snacks I ordered wasn’t available, I was asked if I’d like anything else to which I said no. Then he came back a couple of minutes later to ask if I was sure I didn’t want anything trying to sell me whatever he could! We ordered drinks which came out quickly. We ordered fries, calamari & garlic bread as snacks. The fries were a teeny tiny bowl full, the calamari was soggy, not nice at all & the garlic bread had no garlic on it what so ever! The food was definitely over priced.

Just spent $167 on a meal for 4 (mains and drinks only) that could generously be described as average. The steaks were tough and tasteless (like water).
Service was poor. Left waiting 30 minutes after seated (in a restaurant that was not busy) before drinks order taken and had to ask for water.
Poor value for money.

Cafe 162 is my regular stop in place. I really like the fact that the staff know my name, what I drink and take time to chat with me when I pop in.
This place has had bad reviews on here and I think it’s pretty unfair that no one has written how good it is. Cafe 162 has never sold itself as or pretended to be a restaurant. It’s a Bar/Cafe and they do a really good job. I’ve eaten here and never had a problem. The Chef is friendly and she pops out to say hello. The big breakfasts are huge and really tasty, their OP steaks are mean and their Lamb Pie is really good.
You can’t please everyone but I reckon these guys do a great job and needed some positive feedback on here. Cheers guys, Jacob

I stopped going to Cafe 162 some time ago. While the meals were average, the service left a lot to be desired. The last time I went, my daughter and I were abandoned after our dessert was served. No-one ever came to ask if we wanted coffee, although a lot of table cleaning was going on, making it pretty clear that the staff hoped we’d go, despite the fact it was only around 9.30. I hope that in the meantime the service has improved, but I’m not willing to give this restaurant another chance, after too many disappointing visits.

Would not recommend the filo vegetable parcel. What normally would cost you about $9 in an inner city cafe will set you back just over $21 here. Overpriced and a pitiful quantity. Some confidence in a the staff wouldn’t go amiss either. What more can you expect from a ‘Local Point’.
